Teaching Integers to Students
Teaching
Integers to students can be a difficult concept. Students have to
learn that integers are whole numbers, but they can either have a
positive or negative sign. There are a few common errors related to
learning about integers, due to integers being about to be positive or
negative numbers. Some students may try to add, or subtract, positive
and negative integers and pick the value they started with for the
solution. This is a problem because the positive or negative sign they
started with is not always the correct sign for the solution. Also, if
students who do not have strong number concept than adding and
subtracting integers can be a difficult concepts.
Students need to understand the basic operations of integers to solve problems. I can teach the operations conceptually by making sure my students have prerequisite skills, such as a baseline understanding of numbers, addition and subtraction, and also what a positive and negative number is. To begin teaching students about integers it is important to address any common misconceptions students have about integers. |
Students must understand the concept of integers before they can learn how to solve simple problem operations with integers. There are many ways to teach the operations of integers. Using technology is effective in society today because many students surround themselves by technology. Two videos that engage students from the start are Adding Negative Numbers with Mean Girls and Darth Vader and Adding and Subtracting Negative Numbers. Click on the title of each video to be directed to each YouTube video. Both of these videos help explain the important rules that students must know when adding and subtracting integers.
All forms of visual aids can be helpful when teaching this concept. Another way to teach integers to students us by allowing them to make a foldable in class. Integrating making a foldable into a lesson allows the students to follow along the teacher while learning about integers, and also allows students to have the opportunity to ask questions if needed.
