My Teaching Philosophy
The purpose of education in the United States is to expand ones knowledge throughout steps during many educational subjects. Expanding a person’s knowledge makes them able to give back by improving certain aspects in the world we live in today. Gaining an education starts young and continues throughout life. Teachers help students gain the education they need to become the leaders of our world.
A teacher’s role in the classroom is to help all students achieve an education. As a teacher, I am responsible for giving my students all of my effort and attention. I am also responsible for presenting all information within the curriculum, along with anything else that would be helpful to my student’s education. A teacher needs to be a motivator and a challenger. In the classroom the students should be challenged daily but the teacher should be right behind them the whole way answering questions and encouraging students when learning is tough. A classroom should be lead by a teacher, and in control at all times. A teacher should have the lessons planned out each day to keeping the students engaged in the topic at hand. A teacher can achieve this through differentiation. A classroom should be a second home to the students, where a student is comfortable and ready to learn. The teacher must make a classroom a positive environment, not only for students to be comfortable and ready to learn, but also to be excited about learning. How a teacher models and organizes his or her classroom can directly affect student’s educational gains each year. It is important that elementary teachers teach students how to be a good student and an active learner. The elementary years are crucial to show children the basics of knowledge they will build their education on throughout their lives. Teachers must model good ethics, behavior, leadership, and what to do to be a good learner. When children in the elementary grade levels have that positive role model, they often mock those actions. This helps create active learners and constructors for the grades to follow. However, the teacher can only do so much within a classroom. Students’ have roles within the classroom as well that affect education within all grade levels.
The students’ roll is to be an active learner and constructor. Student’s role as a learner is to put full effort into expanding their knowledge and gaining a higher education. Students learn by doing and constructing their own thoughts. The students role includes participating in classroom discussions, ask questions, express ideas, and apply knowledge to his or her education. Students need to have an open outlook on different activities, lessons, and learning opportunities to be able to gain the most out of school every day. Currently students in pre-k-12 do not have a choice in what they are learning or how they are taught in the classroom, but they do have choice in the effort they put into their school work, homework, listening, projects, and other aspects of their education. Students must monitor themselves when it comes to effort, study time, quality schoolwork, and how they behave during school. It is also the students’ responsibility to be prepared for class at all times, and also clean up after themselves throughout the day. Students’ families and home life often influence the way they act throughout these roles within the classroom.
Families of students have a big role in pre-k-12 education in the United States. Family diversity can greatly influence a child because of who their family is, where they come from, and also their socio-economic status. Different cultures can change student’s values, lifestyle, and what he or she believes in. A child’s life at home can also play a role in a student’s education. For example, a single parent household can affect a child for a variety of reasons, including trauma of a divorce, or having to depend on one parent to do everything. A child with a home life like the example, could lead to the child’s parent being unable to come to school meetings, help with homework and making sure children are on the correct track due to working late, being apart of school activities, or could affect the money that is available for tutoring or field trips. All families have different problems that could hinder the role they have in the education system and also their role in the student’s life. It is important for families to be able to help their child expand their knowledge and develop as students. Families need to be willing to help with schoolwork outside of school, along with making sure they do what is needed in school. The need for the extra help and guidance at home is crucial for children. If families are not supportive of school, and also are not able to help with homework, money, or other necessities involved with school, it can hinder a student’s learning experience. Also a family has to be a good role model for that student, setting them up to become well-educated people. It is important for students to have a positive role model that is encouraging them to be the best they can be at home.
Along with a family’s role, the community has a role in pre-k-12 education in the United States. The community can help children achieve the goal of expanding their knowledge in many different ways. The community needs to offer good surrounding, with nothing to derail a student from going down a path of education. Students need opportunities for extra curricular activities in order to stay out of trouble. These opportunities such as youth group, sports, volunteer options, and safe places for children to get together are an important part to creating a positive community. Communities need to provide services for students to help them continue to gain knowledge for school and also other important life lessons. Libraries are important in a community because students need to be continuously provided with books to read. Reading helps development in many areas for students, and a library has an endless amount of sources for students to grow. Libraries also provide a quiet area that students can use to think and study, which they may not have at home. Other educational services needed in communities include tutoring centers, educational museums, and educational activity centers. These provide students the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways that can be interesting to them and also fun. They show how learning is not boring and can be achieved throughout many different activities. These educational services also provide opportunities for families and friends to learn together. Communities should also provide sports opportunities and community service opportunities. Students gain many important lessons when they are part of a team, doing individual sports, and when giving back to the community. When a community provides different services such as these, it helps students become better rounded and creates a positive environment for students in and out of school. Safety and a sense of community are also important for students to be able to grow and develop. Altogether, the community has a big role in pre-k-12 education for students.
My view of teachers being a motivator and challenger will constantly keep kids learning and continuing to expand their knowledge. With my view on students being an active constructor they will stay engaged with learning, and will learn more hands on. The importance of family and community to back up students everyday will keep them striving to become better, and will keep them wanting to expand their knowledge.
